Meeting Sept. 20, 10:30 am, ICPL

Join BICSF for a new school year organizational meeting at 10:30 AM at ICPL, meeting room E (upstairs). There is a kids' event going on at the same time in the downstairs meeting rooms, and there will be BICSF parents there to hang out with kids so that more parents can attend the meeting.

We'll strategize about ways to keep the School Board on track as it considers the Wellness Plan and how to get our principals and teachers more involved and well educated about healthy food options.

Also, check out Chef Ann's blog entry about improving school food:

"Every five years, Congress overhauls the Child Nutrition Act, which sets the level of funding for school meals. Right now, the USDA is collecting public comment to share with Congress during 2009, when the act will be renewed. There has never been a better time for anyone who has a student, knows a student, is a student or ever was a student to speak up for better school meals.

To let Congress know your views, visit www.regulations.gov and enter "child nutrition" in the comments search box. The USDA is accepting comments through Oct. 15

Hi!

We are a group of Longfellow parents who love food and have become concerned with ensuring that our children are offered healthier options at school. None of us are food purists - we all eat junk and treats from time to time - but we've found it increasingly hard to maintain a healthy balance in our children's lives. We are all strong supporters of the local food movement and believe that buying locally-produced foods, and, when possible, organic foods, is good for our community and for the environment. See our individual profiles (Deirdre Egan, Jennifer New and Bronwyn Threlkeld-Wiegand) for more details.
